Terrytoons was known as the cheapest studio in the business. Leonard Maltin, the film critic, wrote a masterful book on the history of animated cartoons, broken down by studio. His essay on Terrytoons was very enlightening.
I also recall cartoons featuring Farmer Gray or Farmer Brown. Many were silent but for classical music (which didn't necessarily match the action taking place). I can't quite pin down the precise pieces, but I find some works by Mendelssohn (Violin Concerto, Symphony No. 4) and Smetana (Bartered Bride opera) evocative.
I've been searching the Net in an attempt to find the piece that's been rumbling around in my head. I haven't found it yet, but did run across a nice collection of cartoon clips featuring classical music, and there are several Terrytoon classics on YouTube.

While they're not the piece I've been searching for, they certainly were used in many cartoons.
