Sutro Baths
(San Francisco)
Opened in 1896, this privately-owned swimming complex featured seven pools, six of which contained
salt water and some of which were heated. The baths were the largest indoor swimming center in the
world, and were a popular weekend destination for many San Franciscans. The building also
housed a museum, a concert hall, and an ice-skating rink. Fire destroyed the building in 1966.
