I remember them being referred to as "suicide knobs" due to the danger they presented when using them to steer, instead of holding on to the steering wheel. I do believe that several accidents occured, due to the reckless use of them, back in the day.

Every time my dad would get a new car (which was quite often in those days), the first thing he would do is buy one of these and put it on.
