I remember us having a car seat like this (no steering wheel attached, though). I was older by the time my parents invested in one, but at least two of my younger brothers rode in it. As crazy as this seems now, it was better than what came before, which was either nothing or a "car bassinet" like this: car bassinet
I remember my mom putting this in the back seat of our car for my younger brothers when they were infants. The legs folded underneath and it just sat on the seat.
True. No seat belts either. We were allowed to ride in the back window on the "package shelf". The most vivid recollection i have of trying to kill us was when we rode back from Fernandina Beach (NE Florida) sitting on the open tailgate of the station wagon. Probably only going about 50, but still. I always wondered why my folks had 4 kids. Now I know - replacements.

It's a wonder any of us survived.
