When I first saw one of those things when I was a little kid, I had no idea what it was, but, I knew it couldn't be good.

It was also good for a toothache and other pain reducing uses!

Robert H. You are correct - hence the name "Enema Bag". My mom would fill it with warm soapy water (this was in the early to mid 50's), grease up the end with petroliun jelly and "fill you up". It also doubled as a hot water bottle and for douching.

Is an enema bag what I think it is and has it something to do with 'cleaning out the system, like those things I had to do when I had a colonoscopy?

I remember the rubber bag as I used it to ease pain from a bad tooth and other problems, but as to using Castor Oil, I do not think Mom ever gave me or any of my siblings such a thing!

Yes! It had another use that, thankfully, as kids we didn't know about.
