I finally got around to reading this recently. The characters are often nearly broke, and can hardly ever afford to travel even by Greyhound bus. So they arrange for rides in private cars through "travel bureaus". Apparently, right after World War II, there were travel bureaus in most major cities that matched cars that needed to be driven somewhere with drivers who needed transportation.
They also helped drivers find passengers to share the drive and the cost. First I've heard of that. There's a nice article about this here .
