Logansport High School, in Indiana, uses Felix the Cat as its official animal mascot, and has been doing so for 100 years.
The whole story starts with the basketball team (whose colors were black and red, like Felix) spotting a small stuffed Felix in a store while traveling to a tournament.
The coach bought the toy, and it "lived" in a gym locker until this one time, the Berries (Yes, that's their team name) played poorly in the first half. The team captain brought the toy out with him and placed it at halfcourt during 2nd-half warmups. The Berries charged from behind to with the game, and the toy's appearance at games became a regular thing.
I can't find the evidence now, but I remember reading somewhere that they managed to get permission from the cat's original cartoonist to keep the tradition up.
There is now a huge Felix painted on the floor at their gym, the "Berry Bowl", and the stuffed toy is now on display in the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.
They now have a cheerleader in costume at games, rather than a stuffed Felix.
Yeah, I'm a high-school sports (and mascot) geek. :)
I first watched the old Vanbeuran "Felix The Cat" Movie cartoons on "The Johnny Jellybean Show" on WABC TV Ch.7 in NYC weekday mornings back in the late 1950's.
In 1960..The Trans-Lux/Joe Orliolo "Felix The Cat" TV cartoons were seen on "Felix The Cat & Friends" with "Uncle Fred" Scott..monday to saturday evenings on WNEW TV Ch.5 in NYC. I enjoyed those cartoons.
