I remember riding Santa Fe trains cross country eating in the Fred Harvey dining car. At the same time Santa Fe dropped the Fred Harvey meal service (1968, when the company was sold) the railroad also stopped its daily trips to the Grand Canyon from Williams, Arizona. Notable because Fred Harvey continued to be a concessionaire at the Grand Canyon National Park, later under the name Amfac (the Honolulu-based company that bought Fred Harvey).

On its last run in July 1968, the train to the Grand Canyon had only three passengers. Service would not resume until 1988. Santa Fe briefly used the tracks for freight but they were abandoned and sold off just prior to the restart of passenger service.

Amfac was renamed Xanterra in 2002 (this was actually the aftermath of Amfac's bankruptcy) and Xanterra bought the Grand Canyon Railway in 2006.
