"Blue laws" were widespread
Blue laws
These laws, also known as Sunday laws, restricted business activity on Sunday.  In some states, no retail business at all was allowed; others restricted the sale of alcoholic beverages.  In yet other areas, sale of clothing and household items was prohibited.  Some of these laws are still on the books.

My state, Minnesota, finally changed a 159-year-old law that banned liquor sales on Sundays. Yesterday, July 2, 2017 was the first day liquor sales once again became legal. North Dakota still prohibits retailers from opening until noon, but they've had legal liquor sales for ages. Weird.
