Egads, ether! I was just 5 years old at the time, and still remember being knocked out with that nasty stuff. And the vivid, colorful, seemingly endless dreaming while I was out. Huge contrast compared to modern anesthesia, where it seems like no time has passed. And forget the ice cream, who could even manage to swallow after that ordeal?
I was unlucky as I had the operation 2 times and I can still remember the cone being placed over my mouth the the surgeon telling me to count backwards from 10 as they poured the ether over the cone...it was a most pleasing experience but I do not remember getting ice cream after surgery!
I still remember the time my younger sister and I arrived at the hospital for our turn to have our tonsils removed. The day before the surgery, as we were settling in, the nurse asked us what flavour popsicle we would like following surgery. I recall laying on the operating table, turning my head, and my sister was laying on an operating table in the same operating theatre. Were we eager for those popsicles when we came to after surgery? I was nine years old, so I guess I wasn't privy to the nurse's sarcastic humour.

Thankfully none of my 5 sisters & me were spared this "pleasure".
