You're right...I DID MEAN Sno-BALLS...NOT Sno-CONES!!! When I was a kid they came in two colors - White & Pink...never a big fan of coconut, though. At 65, I STILL remember that trip like it was just last year....
In 1959, during the summer between 4th & 5th grade the folks sent me to CYO Day Camp...one day we got a tour of the Hostess factory in (IIRC) Weehawken, NJ...we saw the entire process from the workers cutting open the sacks of ingredients (on the top floor...the system worked on the gravity principle) to the baking in the long conveyor ovens. At the end of the tour we had samples of Sno-Cones & cupcakes (which the 'Food Nazis' are trying to ban)...think God I grew up in an era where the anti-food nutcases were ignored or didn't yet exist!!!
As I recall, the Hostess cup cakes came two in a package and always had the icing with the squiggle. Drakes Yankee Doodles were the ones that had three in a package, with no icing on top, but they were still creme filled.
Hostess also made plain chocolate cupcakes with chocolate icing, three to a pack, with no cream filling and no squiggly white line. I'd buy them once in a while, thinking it was a better deal because they were the same price, but they just weren't as good. That extra cupcake didn't make up for no cream filling and no squiggly line.
Commercials touted the cupcakes' "creme filling, lighter than a cloud."

They just announced on the news that Hostess is closing up for good. Thank you Baker's Union for destroying something that meant so much to many people.
