Many people feel that today's tomatoes are a far cry from those in the '50s and '60s, flavor-wise.
Scientists say that our attempts to breed tomatoes that are red all over have had the side effect
of making them less flavorful.

I grew up with a huge garden, and I live close enough to New Jersey to have access to Jersey tomatoes when in season.  Most supermarkets, especially in the off season, have greenhouse tomoatoes that have either been forced to grow faster with ethelyne gas.  (See here:  https://www.davidsonfarmersmarket.org/painted-tomatoes-ethaline-gas-speeds-ripening/). 
You always pay a price for convenience and efficiency.

@notsteve - I'll have to disagree with you. Today's fruits and vegetables are so heavily genetically modified for larger yield at the sacrifice of natural flavor. Those "so-called" tomatoes on the vine are too perfectly uniform. They don't even look natural.
Yes! "Back in our Day" wasn't perfect, but there were far more things about that is better than it is today.

I largely disagree with this. Many stores now sell "tomatoes on the vine" which are good. Some cherry tomotoes, like Sweet 100, are crazy-good. Niche growers are producing more heirloom varieties. There are more varieties of sweet corn too; I don't remember white corn in the '60s, it's extremely sweet (actually too sweet for me - - I prefer yellow or yellow/white hybrid.)

Sometimes I think we long for the "good ol' days", when often they really weren't that good.

I tend to agree that a number of foods taste nothing like they used to, and this includes produce. I imagine it comes from trying to produce more and make it ever cheaper. Add to it using cheaper substitute ingredients, and well, there you go.

We get our tomatoes on Saturday at the farmer's market in the town park in the summer.
The farmers get there around seven in the morining with all kinds of good home grown things to sell at really reasonable prices.
Love liveing in a small town.Everyone is so friendly,so different then city life

Associated Food Store sold them in 3-packs. Mom would send me to the supermarket, that's what I recall.

People come from miles around to buy fresh Jersey tomatoes at our farm stands.

You should try Florida tomatoes - talk about bad! They taste like cardboard at $3.98 a pound. Can't even grow them here, the bugs and birds get them.

Ain't that the truth!!!!!!!!!! I would kill for a good tomato from the 50's!
