I used Salvo in 1968-69. It was strong stuff, and it cleaned my (then) husband's clothes better than anything else at the time -- even Tide, which I had always considered the absolute King (or Queen) of laundry detergents. In fact, it cleaned so well that I wondered at the time if it contained lye. I do remember it seemed to be hard on my clothes, so I only used it on towels and my husband's pants and tshirts. When washing something now that is particularly dirty or stained, I remember Salvo, and a tear comes to my eye when I recall our time together.
CJ...in the town of Enterprise AL (Just outside the front gate of Ft Rucker - the home of Army Aviation) there's a statue/fountain commemorating the Boll Weevil, which destroyed the cotton industry but promoted the peanut as a cash crop...when I went to Ft Rucker in '75 I heard tales of GI's who'd cruise the town on Friday nights and chuck Salvo tablets into the Boll Weevil fountain...according to the story it was fun for the locals who'd set up lawn chairs and watch the action...obviously this tomfoolerry wasn't restricted to t Rucker and its environs...
Wonderful fun for a child ! My mother would call me in from playing outside (you remember playing out, right ? what kids used to do...) to drop the Salvo into the washer (or else incur my youthful wrath !)

While stationed at Scott AFB near Belleville, IL in 1970, my roommate got busted tossing Salvo Tablets in the City Fountain. Not only was he fined by the city but also had an Article 15 from his Squadron Commander...The suds in the fountain was beautiful though...LOL
I used this product in the 1970's - not as a laundry detergent but to soften hand knitted items. It was wonderful to use before you blocked the item. I called PG when I could no longer find it in the supermarkets. They gave me the name of a product which would do the same thing but I cannot remember what it was. HELP.
Mom used this in 1964; Tide was cheaper in the long run and she went back to that. PS: Why doesn't Tide smell like it did back in 1964? I got a bottle of "Classic Scent" Ivory Liquid and it smelled NOTHING like the original. I was really mad about that as well. Why can't companies leave well enough alone????
