@Duff - Thank you for this one! Very funny and interesting.
In my "Younger Days" I used to drive truck cross-country and with just the knowledge of the numbering system and a paper map I always made it to my destination. Besides, who needs a GPS telling me to "make a right turn now" while I'm in the middle of a bridge? surprised

And a lot of the roadside picnic areas had a hand operated water pump.

In California, many of the highways that go through densely-populated areas now have high sound walls that are supposed to absorb the traffic noise for area residents. I'm not sure how well they do at that, but they do a great job of hiding the local landscape from drivers and passengers. You could be anywhere; everything's the same. Grrrrr!
