I got to meet Shep a couple of times when I was a student at St. John's. His colleague, Barry Farber, was our broadcast journalism professor and often had class down at his NY office....I believe it was the Piccadilly Hotel in Times Square, not far from the WOR studios. Also hosted Shep at a Muhlenberg College symposium where he did his famous talk about driving from NYC to Eastern Pennsylvania....'with all those Jersey garden centers." He wondered out loud that since Americans had statues of little Mexicans on their lawns if in Mexico they had little Americans on lawns. Just one of our greatest humorists.

I lived in NYCity and was lucky to have caught him live several times at the Limelight Coffee House. Shep expressed his admiration for Mark Twain many times. Most of his one-hour shows were masterpieces of controlled digression where in the last few minutes, he recapitulated and completed the theme with which he began the hour. This was the technique that Twain used in the short story that made him famous, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaverous County". I gotta put that on my rereading list.

He performed his radio show largely on the fly without a script.

My geek friends and I listened to Shep throughout our teens.
