Back in the day, the 1960s, I was in Y Indian Guide, my sister was in Y Indian Maidens. We of course, had separate groups. My dad was my buddy, but I forgot my indian name.
I was a Campfire Girl for 10 years. My Horizon Club (high school) was very conservative and we became upset with the organization around 1970/71. We attended a weekend conference where they advocated civil disobedience. By 1973 I had cut ties with CFG. Campfire has just about disappeared.
Boy Scouts were first. A year later Campfire was organized. Historically, the Boy Scouts and Campfire Girls were brother-sister organizations. Many groups would include little brothers and sisters in activities. Maybe that is what spurred the coed idea. I personally don't agree with Campfire being coed. I liked the idea that we had a club just for girls (and the occasional little brother).
My sister was one. I thought they were better than Girl Scouts. Never understood why they went coed. It was a lot more conservative than the Girl Scouts.
